Paralegal Hiring: Paralegal Career Path

Ropes & Gray’s tiered paralegal career path ranges from entry level to paralegal specialist. The tiered paralegal career path provides a number of growth opportunities, including targeted professional development and possible promotion based upon skill development, increased experience and expertise.  

Qualifications

Entry-Level Paralegal

  • Experience: 0-3 years of prior legal experience.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Skills: The position involves significant contact with attorneys, paralegals and other Ropes & Gray professionals and requires strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. The entry-level paralegal must have the ability to learn and apply practice area concepts to the appropriate assignments and be a self-starter who is highly organized and works collaboratively within and across teams.

Mid-Level Paralegal
  • Experience: 3-5 years of legal experience in a specific practice area of law.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Skills: The position involves significant collaboration with attorneys, paralegals and other Ropes & Gray professionals and requires excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. The mid-level paralegal must be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the practice area rules and procedures anticipate needs and exercise independent judgment.

Senior-Level Paralegal
  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years of legal experience in a specific practice area of law.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Skills: The position involves significant collaboration with attorneys, paralegals and other Ropes & Gray professionals and requires proven superior interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. The senior paralegal must have advanced knowledge and solid understanding of practice area processes, procedures, rules and regulations and must demonstrate the ability to anticipate needs and exercise independent judgment. The senior paralegal mentors and trains paralegals, and provides guidance and acts as a resource to new associates. Paralegals at this level assist attorneys with matter management.

Paralegal Specialist
  • Experience: A minimum of 8 years of legal experience in a specific practice area of law.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree
  • Skills: The position involves significant collaboration with attorneys, paralegals and other Ropes & Gray professionals and requires proven superior interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. The paralegal specialist must have advanced knowledge and solid understanding of practice area processes, procedures, rules and regulations and must demonstrate the ability to anticipate needs and exercise independent judgment. The ability to proactively support our attorneys in managing their matters is expected of paralegals at this level. The paralegal specialist mentors and trains paralegals, and provides guidance and acts as a resource to new associates.

    The specialist makes substantial contributions to the success of the department through management, training and administrative or practice group support. Paralegals at this level assist attorneys with matter management throughout all phases.
