Paralegal Hiring: Paralegal Career Path

Ropes & Gray’s tiered paralegal career path is based on experience, skill and expertise.  The levels within the tiered paralegal career path range from a Case Assistant to a Senior Paralegal.  The tiered paralegal career path provides paralegals with a number of opportunities, including professional and personal growth, promotion based upon skill development, increased experience, education and expertise in the legal profession.  Each level within the tiered structure has defined expectations for qualifications, skill and experience. 

Our tiered structure develops a career path for paralegals for building a specialization in their desired area of law.  A paralegal must meet the minimum years of experience, education and demonstrate the essential skills and knowledge to perform substantial work set forth within the tier.                

Qualifications

Case Assistant

  • Experience:  0-1 years of prior legal experience.  Position works under the direction of a paralegal that provides training, direction and oversight.
  • Education:  Bachelors Degree
  • Skills:
    • Understand and follow directions 
    • Basic writing skills
    • Basic computer skills 
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Attention to detail
    • Learn and master basic practice area vocabulary and procedures
    • Be flexible and adaptable
    • Team player

Entry Level Paralegal
  • Experience:  0-3 years of prior legal experience.  Position works under the combined direction of a lawyer and senior paralegal.
  • Education:  Bachelors Degree
  • Skills:
    • Ability to apply practice area concepts to the appropriate tasks
    • Ability to anticipate actions
    • Understand the interdependencies of the firm’s practice groups
    • Solid computer skills
    • Strong writing skills
    • Strong organizational skills
    • Attention to detail 


Mid Level Paralegal
  • Experience:  3-5 years of legal experience in a specific practice area of law.  Position is responsible for handling substantive projects and cases under the direction of a lawyer.
  • Education:  Bachelors Degree
  • Skills:
    • Conduct fact gathering and analyze information
    • Anticipate needs and exercise independent judgment
    • Advanced knowledge of practice area rules and procedures and the ability to anticipate actions
    • Identify interrelationships among cases, statutes, regulations and other legal authorities
    • Complete understanding of the interdependencies of the Firm’s practice groups

Senior Level Paralegal
  • Experience:  A minimum of 5 years of legal experience in a specific practice area of law.  Position is responsible for handling substantive projects and cases under the direction of a lawyer.  Mentors and trains case assistants and paralegals.  Provides guidance and is a resource to new associates.
  • Education:  Bachelors Degree
  • Skills:
    • Advanced knowledge and solid understanding of practice area processes, procedures, rules and regulations
    • Strong organizational skills demonstrating efficiency within practice area
    • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated ability to anticipate needs and exercise independent judgment for resolution
    • Conduct fact gathering and analyze information
    • Strong writing skills, e.g., drafting complex legal documents
