Chuck Larsen practices in Ropes & Gray's Intellectual Property group in the life sciences and medical device practices, and the firm's Corporate Department and International practice.
Professional Experience
Chuck's practice has a strong emphasis in the fields of biomedical engineering, chemistry, biotechnology and business methods. His practice involves a wide range of life sciences based technology applications, including mechanical and electrical implants, orthopedics, medical diagnostics, energy-based therapeutics, organ transplants, pharmaceuticals and drug delivery systems. His work in drug delivery technologies has included extensive analysis and drafting of mechanical patents that protect nebulizer technologies, iontophoresis systems, and injection syringe devices, as well as patents that protect combinations of devices and systems with electrical systems and biologics and pharmaceuticals.
He has extensive work in mechanical medical device technologies that operate in combination with chemical and electrical systems. Exemplary technologies include nebulizer technologies and injection syringe devices, iontophoresis systems.
Chuck advises clients on how best to position their intellectual property portfolios for protecting their commercial interests in the United States and abroad. Chuck performs patent prosecution, including before the U.S. PTO and European Patent Office, oversees European oppositions, and conducts patent validity, infringement, and freedom to operate studies for both U.S. and European patents. He regularly performs intellectual property portfolio due diligence for equity investments and acquisitions and counsels clients as to structuring the transactions to address the intellectual property risks involved. A significant component of his practice also includes negotiating and drafting complex commercial agreements, including collaboration and license agreements, tech transfer, contract manufacturing, research, distribution and development agreements, spin-outs, and financing and acquisition agreements, both domestically and abroad.
Chuck also advises clients in understanding and complying with export laws when exporting technology and other goods and services and when investing in or acquiring other companies.
As a U.S. lawyer and U.K. solicitor, Chuck has a particular emphasis on intellectual property strategies and transactions in the U.S. and Europe.
