Hassen counsels clients in all aspects of patent litigation to help businesses achieve their strategic and scientific goals, with a particular emphasis on the life sciences. His experience covers a variety of technologies including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical devices. He also has significant experience advising clients in connection with Hatch-Waxman Act litigation.
Hassen is one of the few trial lawyers in the United States to hold a medical degree, and has served as the lead or co-lead associate on a number of high-profile matters. He has been involved with all phases of complex patent litigation from pre-trial investigation through appeal. His experience includes day-to-day case management, taking fact and expert depositions, arguing motions in court and examining witnesses at trial.
- AstraZeneca LP et al v. Breath Limited et al, Civil Action No. 09-cv-1518 (RMB) (AMD) (D.N.J.). Member of trial team for ongoing ANDA litigation involving AstraZeneca’s pediatric asthma drug, PULMICORT RESPULES®, and patents concerning inhalation medication for the treatment of asthma.
- Genyzme Corporation v. Seikagaku Corp. et al., Civil Action No. 10-cv-10636 (DPW) (D. Mass.): Member of trial team representing Genzyme in a patent infringement action concerning a method of using a medical device for osteoarthritis treatment. After a three-day hearing, we secured a preliminary injunction for our client.
- Novartis Vaccines & Diagnostics, Inc. v. Wyeth and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Civil Action No. 07-cv-067 (JRG) (E.D. Tex.): Member of trial team representing Wyeth in a patent infringement case involving recombinant Factor VIII used to treat Hemophilia A.
- Genzyme Corporation v. Anika Therapeutics, Inc., Civil Action No. 10-cv-11146 (DPW) (D. Mass.): Member of trial team representing Genzyme in a patent infringement action concerning a method of using a medical device for osteoarthritis treatment.
- Cancer Research Tech. Ltd. & Schering Corp. v. Barr Labs, Inc., Civil Action No. 07-457 (SLR) (D. Del.): After a seven-day ANDA trial involving the patent covering TEMODAR®, which is the leading chemotherapy drug used in the treatment of glioma (a type of brain cancer), the District Court prevented the generic product from entering the market pending appeal. The Federal Circuit confirmed the enforceability of the patent-in-suit.
