The Intellectual Property Group’s practice reflects the global focus of our clients. We represent European and Asian-based companies doing business in the United States, as well as U.S.-based companies doing business abroad.  We help clients formulate strategies for worldwide patent protection and enforcement and work across many jurisdictions to bring those strategies to fruition.

We maintain close relationships with top practitioners in global jurisdictions enabling us to provide our clients with the best legal services. Working with local counsel we've represented our clients' interests before the World Trade Organization, European Commission and courts around the world, including in Paris, Brussels and London. The firm’s lawyers speak a wide range of languages, including Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish.

In recent years, the importance of the U.S. market in the global economy has led to marked growth in the firm’s roster of foreign clients. This is consistent with the marked trend in increased ownership of U.S. patents by foreign companies. At the present time, more than 50 percent of U.S. patents are owned by foreign companies. Companies whose world headquarters are located in foreign countries are increasingly becoming plaintiffs in U.S. courts where proceedings are frequently less time consuming, and damages awards are higher than in the companies’ homelands.

Representative Matters

  • We represented Sanyo entities in various patent litigations.
  • We represented Saifun in a case involving patents and trade secrets relating to a new generation of memory chip devices. The case was settled favorably soon after Saifun filed a complaint, which resulted in the parties establishing a business relationship that included substantial value flowing to Saifun. (Saifun Semiconductors v. AMD and Fujitsu)
  • We represented Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Via in patent litigation against Intel. (Via Technologies v. Intel)
  • We represented British Telecom in multiple litigations relating to the company’s U.S. patents covering the installation of fiber optic cable. (British Telecommunications v. Verizon, et al.)
  • We obtained summary for judgments in complex electronics disputes for our client, British electronics concern Snell & Wilcox, Ltd. (Laser Pacific v. Snell & Wilcox; Faroudja v. Snell & Wilcox)
