Medical Devices
Intellectual property issues facing the medical device industry can touch on disciplines as diverse as biochemistry, mechanical and electrical engineering and electronics. As one of the largest full-service intellectual property practices in the world, the Intellectual Property Group has acquired extensive experience in all of these technical areas. Our team is uniquely suited to meet the needs of both entrepreneurial start-ups and multinational corporations developing medical devices and related products.
Our attorneys have worked with leaders in the field of medical devices and products to obtain patents, manage worldwide patent portfolios, negotiate licenses and aggressively defend patent portfolios in the United States and internationally. Many of our attorneys have achieved world recognition in the prosecution and litigation of patent matters. We understand both the legal dimension of our clients’ intellectual property, and the scientific and substantive aspects of their innovations and products. More than 65 of the firm’s attorneys, patent agents and technical advisors hold Ph.D.s and Masters in areas such as Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Experimental Medicine and Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
The Intellectual Property Group has worked extensively in the medical devices arena, from the earliest stages of design and development to the eventual marketing of such products worldwide. One of our more significant engagements involved assisting a start-up company that was investigating new ways to perform cardiac bypass procedures. Working with the company's personnel, we developed an extensive portfolio of patent applications on various improvements for facilitating such procedures. After only about 30 months, with no actual product yet on the market, the start-up company was sold to a major manufacturer for more than $80 million.
Our clients in the medical device industry include Becton, Dickinson and Company; Arrow International, Inc.; Nellcor Puritan Bennett, Inc.; St. Jude Medical ATG, Inc.; Iso Stent LLC, C.R. Bard, Inc.; BioRad Laboratories, Inc.; and Cornell Research Foundation.
