Telecommunications

Ropes & Gray's Intellectual Property Group history is inextricably intertwined with the history of the telecommunications industry.  We successfully represented Alexander Graham Bell in more than 600 patent cases. In fact, Frederick Fish served as President of AT&T. Our representation of clients in the telecommunication industry has continued, uninterrupted, to this day.

Optical fibers, wireless, digital transmission, the Internet, satellite television and moving video… all of these create new challenges, new ideas and new inventions in need of protection. We understand the intricacies of the telecommunications field and have the resources to protect any telecommunications company's intellectual property interests worldwide. Many of our team members have advanced degrees in fields directly relevant to telecommunications.

Representative Experience

  • In AT&T v. Excel Communications, Judge Robinson vacated her earlier summary judgment holding our client AT&T’s patent invalid as anticipated and obvious.
  • In PNI v. Lucent, Judge Zagel in the Northern District of Illinois granted Lucent's cross-motion for summary judgment of non-infringement of the one patent at issue in the case. The Court entered judgment in favor of our client Lucent.
  • In British Telecommunications v. Verizon, et al., we represent British Telecom in multiple litigations relating to British Telecom's U.S. patents covering fiber-optic cable installation.
