Practice

James Haley is the former co-head of Patents in the Corporate IP Group of Ropes & Gray and has been a partner in the IP Corporate Group since 1983. His practice focuses on the worldwide procurement, defense and enforcement of patents in the biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. He has counseled biotechnology and biopharmaceutical clients since 1978 and drafted, prosecuted and defended some of the basic patents in recombinant DNA technology.

Professional Experience

Jim has handled numerous United States and foreign patent litigations, European and other patent oppositions and United States interferences in biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals.

Jim's representative interferences include:  alpha interferon, hepatitis B viral antigens, protein secretion, leukocyte adhesion molecules, beta interferon, interleukin 1 converting enzyme inhibitors, and bone morphogenic proteins, CD40 counterreceptor antibodies, transgenic fibrinogen.

Jim counsels clients on intellectual property protection and licensing of patents and technology.  He has extensive experience in the United States and worldwide patent prosecution in all areas of biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals.  Patents he has prepared and prosecuted have earned clients more than 4 billion dollars in royalties.
