Practice

Joel Freedman is a partner in Ropes & Gray's Corporate Department. Joel's practice involves the representation of private and public companies – assisting with start-up matters, private and public equity and debt financings, general business and strategic contracting, governance, merger and acquisition activities, and general legal advice. Joel also supports venture capital, growth capital and PIPE investors in matters ranging from evaluating and structuring initial investments through assisting with investment exits.

Representative public company clients include: Carter's, a marketer of apparel for babies and young children; Microvision, a provider of optical scanning and miniature display technology, and MDS, a global life sciences company that provides market-leading products and services for the development of drugs and the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Representative private companies include: Jingle Networks, a provider of advertiser supported free directory assistance, Peptimmune, a company developing auto-immune therapies; Pannaway Technologies, a provider of converged broadband voice, video and data IP solutions to telecommunications service providers, and Aerosat, a provider of aviation and entertainment/communications technology.

Representative institutional clients include: Bain Ventures, the venture capital arm of Bain Capital; Highland Consumer Fund and Cayuga Ventures.

Professional Experience

From 1994 to 1996, Joel was the Vice President, General Counsel of Dial Call, a public wireless mobile telecommunications service provider. At Dial Call, Joel was responsible for developing and implementing their legal and regulatory strategy and participated as a member of the senior management team in building the company's business. Through this experience, he learned first hand the business priorities of operating companies from the client side of the client/outside counsel relationship. Following Dial Call's acquisition by Nextel in 1996, Joel returned to Ropes & Gray.
