Practice
John Donovan, a partner in the Litigation Department since 1990 and a member of the firm's Policy Committee, specializes in business litigation, including corporate and securities matters, class actions, disputes in connection with mergers and acquisitions, and other complex business transactions. He has defended securities class actions and derivative cases involving Fidelity Investments, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Morgan Stanley, Gillette, Reebok, The TJX Companies, Timberland, Genzyme, Genuity, Sycamore Networks and many others. In the investment management arena, Mr. Donovan was called upon by the defense group to successfully argue for the dismissal of all derivative litigation arising out of the 2003 mutual fund market timing scandals in multi-district proceedings in Maryland, has represented Putnam, Scudder, MFS, Evergreen, Pimco, and other fund families in multiple class actions under the Investment Company Act, and he secured the only summary judgments ever recorded in litigation challenging investment advisory fees for both the Oakmark Funds and the Ameriprise Funds. Mr. Donovan has also been deeply involved in litigation arising from merger and acquisition activity, both friendly and hostile. He has recently handled litigation arising from corporate transactions or acquisitions including Clear Channel Communications, Avaya, 3Com, Outback Steakhouses, Michaels Stores, West Corp, William Carter Company, Reebok, and many others. He is now quarterbacking the Ropes & Gray team advising State Street Corporation on multiple issues and litigation arising from the sub-prime lending market crisis of 2007.
