June 17, 2009

Ropes & Gray partner Patricia A. Martone was recognized yesterday by the New York City Chapter of the National Organization for Women as a recipient of its 2009 Women of Power & Influence Award. Martone was one of five women to receive the prestigious honor this year at the 21st annual Women of Power & Influence Awards ceremony honoring women’s outstanding accomplishments in the fields of business, law, art, medicine, and activism. The gala awards ceremony took place at the Grand Hyatt at Grand Central.

The Women of Power & Influence Awards honor exemplary women who have forged their way to the top of their career fields and have made their mark as role models for aspiring female professionals. Established in 1988, the award celebrates the accomplishments of women who embody intelligence and perseverance and who share a commitment to advancing women’s rights, opportunities, and quality of life. Past awardees include Nicole Miller, Mary Jo White, Alexandra Lebenthal, Joy Behar, Gloria Steinem, Honorable Elizabeth Holtzman and Ruth Whitney.

Martone is internationally recognized as a leading intellectual property trial lawyer and is co-head of Ropes & Gray’s International Group. As a litigator for more than 30 years, Martone has been lead trial attorney in numerous patent infringement cases, and was instrumental in achieving Polaroid's victory in the landmark case of Polaroid v. Kodak. She entered the legal profession in 1973, when only three percent of practicing attorneys were women. In 1983, she became the first female partner in any major patent law firm in the United States. Today, she is a member of the invitation-only Litigation Counsel of America, and she is consistently honored as one of the “Best Lawyers in America.” Martone, who practices in the firm’s New York office, is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at New York University.

Martone received a B.A. from New York University, a M.A. from Johns Hopkins University and a J.D. from the New York University School of Law where she was Managing Editor, Review of Law & Social Change and a recipient of the Founder's Day Award (top 10 percent of class).
