Practice

Matt Vincent is a partner in Ropes & Gray's Intellectual Property Group and the firm's Corporate Department. Based in our Boston office, Matt is a registered patent attorney who focuses his practice on patent prosecution and counseling, including worldwide patent portfolio development, transactional and financing IP due diligence, licensing and strategic partnering, freedom-to-operate analysis, opinions regarding issues of patent infringement, scope, validity and enforceability, and both offensive and defensive patent strategy.
 
Matt serves clients primarily in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device industries.


Professional Experience

Matt serves as counsel to many sectors of the biotechnology and chemical business community, including both start-up and established companies, as well as non-profit research and educational institutions and hospitals. His patent and licensing experience runs the gamut of life science technologies – from novel small molecule drugs and biologics, to new formulations and uses of old drugs, to combination products in the medical device sector.

Before law school, as a scientist at Tufts University School of Medicine, Matt was involved in research directed to the development of potent inhibitors of proteolytic enzymes, including in the development of drug currently in human clinical trials. Over the more than 15 years of practice, his experience has further grown through diverse clients that includes those in the fields of pharmaceuticals, molecular biology, genomics, cellular and developmental biology, immunology, biochemistry, pharmacology, neurobiology, enzymology, and combinatorial chemistry.

With respect to patent procurement, domestically Matt's practice includes patent portfolio strategy, patent prosecution, as well as appeals, reexaminations, and interferences before the USPTO Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. In addition, Matt has substantial foreign patent experience, including prosecution in a wide variety of jurisdictions.

Matt also helps to structure pharmaceutical related project management in the U.S. and European markets including Hatch-Waxman patent litigation, Orange Book patent studies and certifications and other issues relating to the Patent-FDA interface of pharmaceuticals, as well as new drug strategies and joint venture strategies.
