Paul focuses his practice on patent litigation in federal district courts and before the United States International Trade Commission. With a technical background in mathematics and computer science, Paul’s litigation experience spans cases relating to consumer electronics, computer software, Internet-related technologies, telecommunications, and semiconductors. Paul has served as lead or co-lead associate on several high-profile matters.

In addition to his active practice, Paul frequently publishes and lectures on topics relating to intellectual property. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of Utah, S.J. Quinney College of Law, and currently serves as a member of the adjunct faculty at American University, Washington College of Law, where he teaches "Patent and Trademark Appeals Before the Federal Circuit."

Representative Clients and Matters

  • Certain Gaming and Entertainment Systems, Related Software, and Products Containing Same (337-TA-752): Lead associate on behalf of Motorola in an on-going ITC investigation against Microsoft, relating to five patents directed to features of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 system.
  • Certain Wireless Communication System Server Software, Wireless Handheld Devices and Battery Packs (337-TA-706): Co-lead associate on behalf of Motorola in an ITC investigation against RIM, relating to five patents directed to features of wireless devices. RIM settled with Motorola shortly before the Markman hearing as part of a global settlement of all litigation between Motorola and RIM.
  • Certain Digital Televisions and Certain Products Containing Same and Methods Using Same (337-TA-617): Lead associate on behalf of Polaroid in a successfully concluded ITC investigation brought by Funai, relating to two patents directed to signal processing in digital televisions.
  • Fisher-Rosemount Systems Inc. v. Control Systems International, Inc. (S.D. Tex.): In a case involving cross-claims between two parties that provide automated control systems for industrial processes, successfully argued for summary judgment that CSI infringed Fisher-Rosemount’s asserted patent claims.
