Ropes & Gray opens Tokyo office
October 3, 2007

Ropes & Gray is pleased to announce that it has opened an office in Tokyo, Japan.

Initially staffed by intellectual property attorneys, the office allows the firm to address the needs of Japanese clients with IP matters in the United States. It also provides a base of operations to serve clients in several areas, including IP, as they pursue opportunities in Asia.

The office, known as Ropes & Gray Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi Jimusho, is staffed by four IP attorneys licensed to practice law in Japan by the Ministry of Justice. They include J. Steven Baughman, a litigation partner; James S. DeGraw, a corporate partner; and two associates, Erika Takeuchi and Kaede Toh, who are Japanese citizens.

"We are excited by the opportunity to deepen and grow the firm's relationships with clients in Japan," said Brad Malt, the chairman of Ropes & Gray. "The attorneys in Ropes & Gray's Tokyo Office are experienced in handling the complex legal issues participants in High Technology and Life Sciences industries face each day. We look forward to using our skills to help clients in Japan better protect and profit from their significant investments in technology."

While the Tokyo office has an initial focus on intellectual property, it will serve as a springboard for serving our clients in other key areas, including private equity. Japan has a strong economy and is centrally located among the many dynamic centers of activity in Asia. By opening an office in Tokyo, Ropes & Gray is in a better position to increase the scope of services provided to Asian and non-Asian clients alike.
