Bill Abely joined Ropes & Gray in 2004 as an associate in the Litigation Department.
Professional Experience
Bill has wide-ranging experience representing clients in connection with government investigations by state and federal agencies. He has represented numerous corporations in the health care industry in connection with investigations by the Department of Justice and various state attorneys general concerning allegedly fraudulent marketing and pricing practices. Bill has also represented individuals under criminal investigation for alleged tax fraud, campaign finance violations, and involvement in stock options backdating, and has represented various individuals in connection with inquiries by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Bill also has extensive experience with complex civil litigation. Recently, he successfully argued a motion for summary judgment on behalf of a mutual fund advisory company, and he has previously represented the trustees of various mutual funds in connection with class action litigation. Bill has also represented a major investment banking and securities firm in a jury trial in Federal District Court concerning disputed bond trades and various London Market insurers in connection with 9/11 business interruption litigation.
From 2009 - 2010, Bill served as a Special Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County. As a prosecutor, Bill tried more than a dozen cases and conducted more than 30 evidentiary motions and motions to dismiss.
Prior to joining Ropes & Gray, Bill worked for the U.S. Senate and for two Presidential campaigns. During law school, he served as a Legal Fellow for Virginia Governor Mark Warner.
Professional & Civic Activities
Since 2008, Bill has served as co-chair of the Regional ABA White Collar Crime Young Lawyers Subcommittee.
Bill serves on the Board of Directors of Community Work Services, a Boston-based non-profit helping people who face barriers to work obtain employment and achieve greater self sufficiency.
