Monica Ortel

Associate

Monica Ortel joined Ropes & Gray's intellectual property litigation group in 2017. During law school, Monica interned at a patent prosecution firm where she assisted with patent drafting, prior art searches, and USPTO Office action responses for various large technology & social media companies. Monica also drafted a patent for a pro bono client seeking patent registration through UCLA School of Law’s Patent Clinic. 

Before law school, Monica earned a degree in biomedical engineering, focusing her coursework on polymeric biomaterials. As part of her studies, she took courses specializing in polymeric drug delivery systems, digital signal processing, modeling of biomedical systems, and medical device design. She additionally gained experience coding in Java and Matlab. As an undergraduate, Monica spent two summers interning at a medical device company where she developed and tested laparoscopic surgical instruments.
