Denmark ratifies UPC Agreement
June 20, 2014

On June 20, 2014, Denmark deposited its instrument of ratification in Brussels with the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, making the country the fifth EU member state to join the UPC. A local division of the UPC will be established in Copenhagen, with English as the official language of the Court.

In May, the public in Denmark voted in favor of a referendum to join the Unified Patent Court, and allowed the government to proceed with the ratification process.

Belgium ratifies UPC Agreement
June 6, 2014

On June 6, 2014, Belgium became the fourth EU member state to ratify the UPC Agreement, joining Sweden, Austria, and France. The Belgium Parliament approved ratification in May, and as final step under Article 89(1) the country deposited its instrument of ratification in Brussels with the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union. Belgium plans to open the country’s local division of the UPC in Brussels, where the Court will operate in French, Dutch, German, and English.

Sweden ratifies the UPC Agreement
June 5, 2014

On June 5, 2014, Sweden became the third EU member state to complete its ratification of the UPC Agreement, joining France and Austria. Sweden deposited its instrument of ratification in Brussels with the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union on the 5th, following the Swedish Parliament’s approval of legislation that authorized ratification of the UPC Agreement. Sweden is also part of the planned Nordic-Baltic regional division of the UPC, established in March of this year to include Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Sweden.
