Russell E. Barnwell

Associate

Russ Barnwell joined the firm in 2017 and works primarily in the firm’s health care group. He represents health care and not-for-profit clients on a range of subjects, including regulatory, compliance and enforcement matters; commercial transactions; mergers and affiliations; and matters of corporate governance. Russ regularly helps clients navigate uncharted regulatory waters, and he has significant experience guiding clients through data breach investigations, as well as any accompanying reporting and notification obligations. He has advised clients spanning the health care industry, including hospitals, health systems and other provider organizations; digital health companies; pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers and distributors; and commercial payors, Medicaid and Medicare managed care plans and other risk-bearing organizations.

Before commencing law practice, Russ served as vice president of the University of Chicago Law School’s student government and was a member of the Institute for Justice Clinic on Entrepreneurship. Prior to law school, Russ helped coordinate Alabama’s health insurance enrollment efforts during the initial rollout of health insurance exchanges under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Russ graduated summa cum laude from Huntingdon College in 2013, where he was class president and co-authored a white paper that mapped out a medical education pipeline program, which has since been implemented, in order to address deficiencies in rural health care access.
