Bill McCarthy, became a partner in 1979 and retired on December 31, 2004. He served as head of the Bankruptcy & Business Restructuring Group at Ropes & Gray from 1989 until February of 2004.

Throughout his practice, he represented both debtors and creditors in major reorganization cases throughout the United States. Bill's debtor representations include Laconia Shoe Company, Bay Financial Corporation, J. Bildner & Sons, Inc., Monarch Capital Corporation, Grossman's, Inc. and Genuity, Inc.  He represented the creditors' committees in Grand Union Company,  Axiohm Transaction Solutions Inc., and York Funding, Inc. and the Bridge Loan Committee in Primestar.  He represented Koger Equity, Inc., in the Chapter 11 Case of Koger Properties, Inc. and major investors in a number of other cases, including Lomas Financial, JPS Textiles, Wang Laboratories, Inc., Icon Fitness, Ampad, Dade Baehring, Mattress Discounters, Cumberland Farms, Inc., Ground Round and KB Toys.  He has represented numerous Boards of Directors, including the Boards of Grossman's, Enron Corp. and Stone & Webster, Inc. in connection with the performance of their role in Chapter 11 cases.
