Nelson G. Ross
IN MEMORIAM (1938-2016)
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nelson Ross, formerly the head of Ropes & Gray’s labor & employment department, who died October 27.
Mr. Ross became a partner in 1976 and retired in 2005. He was a brilliant lawyer and a trusted friend and mentor to many at Ropes & Gray.
Throughout his practice, Mr. Ross advised and represented many employers, particularly in the health care industry and in higher education. He gained extensive experience in advising employers on a wide spectrum of current labor and employment issues and in assisting employers in strategic labor relations planning. He regularly represented clients before the National Labor Relations Board, where he had worked for three years before joining the firm.
Mr. Ross also gained special knowledge in collective bargaining negotiations, both traditional and interest-based. He was the chief negotiator in many complex, high-stakes negotiations, and he represented several of the health care employers who were parties to the precedent-setting nine-year master agreement between Lifespan Corporation and Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, a comprehensive agreement dealing with system-wide labor issues.
