David O. Stewart
David Stewart joined Ropes & Gray as a partner in 1989 to begin a litigation group in the Washington, D.C. office. He retired as a partner with the firm in 2005 and retired as counsel to Ropes & Gray in 2015.
His experience in complex litigation included appellate litigation, antitrust and commercial disputes, white-collar criminal defense work, health care law, and challenges to government regulation and enforcement.
David served as principal counsel in federal jury trials, state court trials, administrative proceedings, appeals, and the impeachment trial of Judge Walter L. Nixon, Jr. before the United States Senate. David twice argued before the United States Supreme Court.
David is the author of several books of history, including Madison’s Gift: Five Partnerships That Built America (2015); The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution (2007), Impeached: President Andrew Johnson and the Fight for Lincoln's Legacy (2009) and American Emperor: Aaron Burr’s Challenge to Jefferson’s America (2011). He also writes fiction. The Lincoln Deception, a mystery focused on the John Wilkes Booth Conspiracy, was published in 2013. A sequel, The Wilson Deception will be released in autumn 2015.
