DIY Health Reform: What Health Care Organizations Have Been Doing While Federal Health Reform Has Been Under Consideration

Whatever happens this week or year in Washington, the forces driving health reform efforts are unrelenting. Among these forces are: increasing costs and their effect on American business, declining health care budgets, shrinking reimbursements, a perceived accountability gap, misaligned payment incentives, and decreasing access to care. 

Health care organizations have been implementing a variety of strategies to lead the field, regardless of whether or when health care reform is enacted at the federal level. Many of the tools are familiar (often with new names), such as accountable care organizations, hospital-physician alignment, clinical integration, hospital and provider group consolidation, health information technology investments and pay-for-performance programs.
