Date: April 26, 2016
Time: 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
The recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling Obergefell v. Hodges made history when it affirmed the right of marriage equality in the United States. The impact of the ruling has resonated around the world. In Hong Kong, LGBT couples are litigating against the Immigration Department’s policy to recognize foreign-registered marriages in QT v. Director of Immigration, and the Hong Kong Equal Opportunities Commission has issued a report and submissions recommending the introduction of LGBT anti-discrimination legislation, including protection from discrimination for cohabiting same sex couples.
On April 26, Ropes & Gray invites you to a panel discussion with:
- Douglas Hallward-Driemeier - Ropes & Gray partner who argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in the Obergefell case;
- Michael Vidler - Vidler & Co. Solicitors, the instructing Solicitor in the QT case; and
- Peter Reading - Hong Kong EOC, Legal Counsel.
Topics Include:
- Overview and impact of the Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court arguments.
- Insights from the QT case in Hong Kong: What is the future for marriage equality in Hong Kong?
- How will the EOC’s recent recommendations for LGBT rights in Hong Kong impact society?
