IP transactions partner Regina Sam Penti (Boston) hosted a ‘Lunch n’ Learn’ session titled “Alternative Data: How to Harness the Power and Manage the Risks of Third-Party Alternative Data” at the 5th annual CenterForce IP Strategy Summit in Boston on April 11th.
The session focused on various legal and technical issues associated with the use of non-traditional sources of data and challenged participants to think of data as both an asset and a potential source of liability. The session covered topics including gathering, monetizing and using alternative data, data sourcing in compliance with regulations and contractual restrictions, information theft, intellectual property, and the impact of privacy laws such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation and the recently-enacted California Consumer Privacy Act.
Session participants included representatives from Bose Corporation, Merck, Nuance Communications, Raytheon, Philips, Joslin, Sanofi, and Schneider Electric, among others.
