Litigation & enforcement partners and anti-corruption and international risk co-chairs Ryan Rohlfsen and María González Calvet recently presented at American Conference Institute’s Foreign Corrupt Practices Act conference. The conference serves as a forum for senior government officials, legal and industry experts and leading private practitioners to discuss critical anti-corruption and securities matters.
Ryan shared his perspectives on building, influencing, and promoting an ethical corporate culture amid a global pandemic, geopolitical shifts, post-M&A integration, and more. Ryan discussed with his co-panelists practical examples and real world guidance on measuring and mitigating the risk of bribery, corruption, and noncompliance during periods of business disruption. Co-panelists included: Kathryn Atkinson, Member, Miller & Chevalier Chartered; Claudius Sokenu, SVP, Deputy General Counsel, Global Head of Litigation, Cognizant; and Julia Symon, Chief Compliance Officer, Vice President (Legal), KBR.
María examined how industries and corporations are addressing high stakes cybersecurity and data privacy risks with the increasing reliance on ephemeral communication apps. Key areas of discussion included the DOJ’s refinement of its stance on the use of technology, review decisions from courts evaluating the impact to discovery, and identifying best practices for the remote workforce. Co-panelists included: Hollie Foust, SVP, Deputy General Counsel, Cardinal Health; Lynn Haaland, Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer, Chief Privacy Officer, Zoom Video Communications; Lorinda Laryea, Assistant Chief, FCPA Unit, U.S. Department of Justice; and Veronica Yepez, Partner, Covington & Burling LLP.
