Herbert F. Schwartz, of counsel to the firm, and Silicon Valley-based intellectual property litigation partner Robert J. Goldman, have written Patent Law and Practice, Seventh Edition, the latest update of their one-volume reference book for courts and practitioners. The book is published by BNA Books and is distributed to court personnel through the Federal Judicial Center, which is the education and research agency for the Federal Courts.

Since the book was first published by the Federal Judicial Center in 1988, it has been cited by courts more than 100 times, most notably by the U.S. Supreme Court in its 1996 Markman decision, as well as by law reviews and other legal journals. “Patent Law and Practice addresses the needs of judges or law clerks seeking a concise, accurate and non-contentious statement of the basic principles of patent law,” Goldman said.

In the Seventh Edition, the authors analyze the most recent case law on patent eligibility and validity, infringement, claim construction, equitable defenses, remedies and procedural and jurisdictional issues. The book also addresses the changes to the patent law arising from the passage of the Smith-Leahy America Invents Act in September 2011.

New York-based librarian Carol Hoffman, who also worked on the previous five editions, also participated, and prepared the annotated bibliography of additional research source material.
