Veterans Legal Services (VLS), a legal aid organization that provides free legal assistance to homeless and low-income veterans in Boston, recently honored Ropes & Gray with its Outstanding Pro Bono Award, and recognized Stephen Pagliuca, co-owner of the Boston Celtics and Managing Director of Bain Capital, with VLS’s Distinguished Service Award.
Ropes & Gray and Mr. Pagliuca received their awards at VLS’s 25th Anniversary Gala on Feb. 24. The Outstanding Pro Bono award, presented to Ropes & Gray, is given annually to an organization that has enhanced the quality of life and dignity of veterans through the delivery of outstanding pro bono services. The Distinguished Service Award, presented to Mr. Pagliuca, is awarded annually to an individual in recognition of his or her extraordinary, impactful community contributions.
Director of pro bono legal services Roz Nasdor manages the firm’s involvement with VLS.
The gala featured a speech by Ropes & Gray pro bono client Sokphal Nong (above), who was referred to Ropes & Gray by VLS for immigration assistance. Mr. Nong, a veteran of the Iraq War, had tried unsuccessfully for over 12 years to gain U.S. citizenship.
A Ropes & Gray team helped Mr. Nong file a new application for naturalization, which was granted in early 2016. Following Ropes & Gray’s acceptance of the Outstanding Pro Bono Award, Mr. Nong thanked the firm for “giving [him] a chance to become an American citizen and hope for a brighter future.”
