In a Managing Intellectual Property article, IP litigation partner and practice chair Steve Pepe discussed the benefits and challenges in the Avanci automotive aftermarket patent pool licensing program.
Avanci will license 4G, 3G and 2G essential patents to firms that produce vehicle aftermarket products that are not present during the initial manufacture of vehicles but are meant to be used or installed in them to provide wireless connectivity.
Steve explains that patent licensees will have to consider their individual circumstances, potential exposure and whether the Avanci platform’s licensors will take legal action if they don’t join the aftermarket patent pool, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
