In an Undark Magazine article, health care partner David Peloquin discussed compensation for injured human research subjects. David explained that while not required by law in the U.S., as a matter of practice, almost always in an industry-sponsored research study, the sponsor of the study agrees to pay for the cost of treating subject injuries caused directly by the product under study.

He notes that under the typical arrangement, those companies get to determine who is eligible for payment, but they tend to err on the side of providing compensation. Usually, the research sponsor pays for the cost of the treatment of the injury, but not for expenses, like lost wages or childcare that injured subjects have to pay for while receiving treatment.
