Andrew Malkinson spent 17 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. On 26 July 2023, the Court of Appeal finally quashed Mr Malkinson’s wrongful 2004 rape conviction, after improved DNA testing techniques showed that the DNA evidence implicated another suspect. Ropes & Gray is proud to have provided pro bono assistance on Mr Malkinson’s case for over six years, through the firm’s longstanding partnership with APPEAL, the charity and law practice dedicated to fighting miscarriages of justice and advocating for reform of the UK’s criminal justice system.

This evening, June 6, the BBC will air a documentary called 'The Wrong Man: 17 Years Behind Bars' on BBC2 at 9pm, tracing Mr Malkinson’s two-decade long fight to clear his name. For those unable to catch the documentary live on BBC2 at 9pm, it will also be available on-demand, on BBC iPlayer here after the televised broadcast.

Ropes & Gray’s work with APPEAL (on Mr Malkinson’s case and those of others) is just one example of the firm’s mission to provide the highest level of pro bono legal advice and support to those who need it most. Ropes & Gray demonstrates its ongoing commitment to public service by actively encouraging all of its lawyers firmwide to engage in meaningful pro bono work.
