As Canada reviews an application to impose sanctions on four Chinese surveillance-gear companies over their alleged role in human-rights violations in Xinjiang, activist groups want Canada to use sanctions to seize the companies’ assets, sell them and redirect the proceeds to victims of repression.

In an article for The Wall Street Journal, litigation & enforcement partner Brendan Hanifin discussed the lack of analogous provisions under U.S. law, noting that “confiscating assets is uncommon.”
