In a Bloomberg Law article, health care partner Brett Friedman, former New York State Deputy Commissioner and State Medicaid Director, discussed how state Medicaid programs that offer emergency coverage to patients regardless of immigration status might be scrutinized by the Trump administration.
Medicaid programs nationwide now offer emergency Medicaid coverage to noncitizens. Brett explains that the Trump administration could issue guidance that constrains what is appropriate for emergency Medicaid coverage.
“It is a good acknowledgement to states that if you are providing Medicaid-like coverage to people who are undocumented using state-only dollars, you need to ensure it’s not unnecessarily going to sources that are federally matched,” said Brett.
