AI literacy requirements under the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act have been in effect since February 2025 for developers and users of AI systems. In a Law360 article, data, privacy, and cybersecurity counsel, Edward Machin, highlights that organizations must ensure that their staff and, in some cases, contractors have sufficient knowledge and understanding about the organization’s development and use of AI.
Ahead of effective enforcement in August 2026, Machin advises organizations to act now and tailor AI literacy measures to their specific roles and risks. The European Commission’s guidance stresses that relying on self-education is insufficient; instead, formal training should be a core part of compliance. Accordingly, organizations should now formalize their approach to AI literacy, focusing on relevant individuals and adapting measures to their use cases under the EU AI Act.
