Ropes & Gray advised Sana Biotechnology in a strategic collaboration with Mayo Clinic to advance development of Sana’s gene-modified pancreatic islet cell therapy, SC451, for type 1 diabetes. The collaboration was announced on April 13 and financial terms were not disclosed. In connection with the deal, Mayo Clinic will make an equity investment in Sana.
The collaboration will draw on Mayo Clinic’s experience to accelerate the development, validation, and standardization of protocols for SC451, supporting safe, scalable and consistent delivery across diverse clinical environments. SC451 is designed to allow a single administration of pancreatic islet cells to support long-term glucose control without the need for ongoing insulin therapy or immunosuppression for patients with type 1 diabetes.
The Ropes & Gray team was led by life sciences licensing partner Hannah England and life sciences licensing associate Ian Nilsen.
