Litigation & enforcement partners Eva Carman, Daniel O’Connor and Helen Gugel have been awarded a “2018 Law360 Distinguished Legal Writing Award” through the Burton Awards. The authors have received their award for writing “10th Circuit ruling on SEC’s use of administrative law judges creates circuit split,” published by Westlaw Journal in April 2017. The article examined the decision in Bandimere v. SEC which held that the SEC’s use of administrative law judges violates the appointments clause of the Constitution. The article also provided a more detailed discussion of the recent constitutional challenges brought against the SEC’s in house tribunals. The full article is available here.
This is an honor given to only 30 articles from entries submitted by the nation's 1,000 largest law firms. This year, the non-profit program, which is run in association with the Library of Congress, presented by lead sponsor Law360, and co-sponsored by the American Bar Association, celebrates its 19th Anniversary. The program is dedicated to rewarding great achievements in law, with a special emphasis on writing and reform. The award winners are selected by judges and law school professors, including professors from Harvard Law School, Stanford Law School, and UC Berkeley Law School.
The awards will be presented at the annual Burton Awards ceremony at the Library of Congress on May 21, 2018. At this year’s ceremony, Richard N. Haass, President of the Council on Foreign Relations, will be interviewed, Fox News host Tucker Carlson will participate in a debate, and Jeff Toobin, an American lawyer, blogger, author, pundit, and legal analyst for CNN and The New Yorker, will receive an award for Outstanding Journalist in Law. The awards ceremony will be followed by a pre-dinner reception, Gala, and performance by Broadway Stars, Megan Hilty from Wicked and Smash, and Stephanie J. Block, also from Wicked.
