Law360 honored Ropes & Gray’s health care practice as a 2019 “Group of the Year,” a prestigious recognition that underscores the firm’s position as a leading adviser to clients on complex health care issues.

The award is one of five Law360 2019 “Group of the Year” awards that Ropes & Gray received: private equity, fund formation, securitizations and white collar.

In 2019, the firm’s health care practice counseled clients across a wide range of challenging litigation, regulatory and transaction matters representing every sector of the global health care industry, making it the only firm to be featured in Law360’s “Group of the Year” in the health care and private equity categories, in particular.

“[Health care] is a significant component of the economy both in the U.S. and worldwide. We have deep expertise in a number of areas where health care and life science organizations need assistance,” health care co-chair Timothy McCrystal told Law360.

Guiding the merger of two of New England’s largest health insurers capped off the past year for the firm’s more than 70 health care attorneys, who steered over $17 billion in transactions.

Noteworthy highlights include:

  • Advising Harvard Pilgrim Health Care in its merger with Tufts Health Plan, forming a unified health care system under a common corporate parent reaching 2.4 million people.
  • Advising on multiple hospital system deals totaling over $500 million, including Los Angeles-based Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s negotiation of a whole-hospital joint venture with Providence St. Joseph Health in Washington State.
  • Representing Catalyst Institute Inc. in the sale of  a minority interest in DentaQuest, LLC, a nationwide, for-profit dental financing and care delivery enterprise managing dental benefits for more than 27 million Americans.
  • Representing a group of investors, including Bain Capital, in an agreement to acquire U.S. Renal Care Inc., the third largest dialysis provider in the United States.
