Steve Sencer, counsel in Ropes & Gray’s health care and higher education practices, will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Atlanta Business Chronicle and the Georgia Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel at the ninth annual Corporate Counsel Awards ceremony in Atlanta on May 4th. The awards highlight the outstanding work done by in-house counsel and emphasize the value the legal professionals honored add to their organizations.

Steve, who most recently served as the Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Emory University, has significant experience in scientific and clinical research and technology transfer. At Emory, he served as the chief legal officer for both Emory University and Emory Healthcare, a wholly owned health system with 12 hospitals and over 2,000 physicians, as well as affiliated entities such as The Carter Center and DRIVE, Emory’s nonprofit drug development company.

An Atlanta Business Chronicle profile article notes that Steve became general counsel in 2010 and served under three Emory University presidents. He served during time of rapid growth with Emory becoming the largest employer in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Steve oversaw the legal aspects of Emory campus growth including the Health Sciences Research Building II and the cancer tower at Emory University Hospital Midtown that is scheduled to open later in 2023, along with multiple hospital acquisitions.

Steve said that one of the biggest changes he faced as general counsel was “finding ways for the Emory faculty to not just come up with new and brilliant ideas, but see those ideas translated into drugs and vaccines and practical applications.”
