Litigation and enforcement partner Doug Hallward-Driemeier has been named to the list of “2023 Trailblazers” by the National Law Journal. The award honors exceptional legal professionals who have made a significant mark on the industry and are considered agents of change.
Doug, who is head of Ropes & Gray’s appellate & Supreme Court practice, is perhaps most widely known for arguing Obergefell v. Hodges, which in 2015 legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states. Obergefell is one of many pathbreaking cases in which Doug has been involved. He has presented over 100 appellate arguments, and argued 19 times before the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as before every federal circuit court of appeals. He has successfully challenged federal and state laws trying to restrict employers from holding DEI trainings, and, more recently, Doug prevailed at the Supreme Court, with a unanimous 9-0 decision for the Mall of America, in a high stakes bankruptcy case.
Doug rejoined the firm in 2010 after more than a decade handling civil appeals and Supreme Court litigation for the DOJ. In 2004-2009, he was an Assistant to the Solicitor General, where he briefed and argued cases on behalf of the United States before the Supreme Court.
