Motorola and RIM Settle Patent Infringement Dispute

Ropes & Gray client Motorola, Inc. recently entered into a settlement and licensing agreement with Research In Motion (RIM), ending a lengthy patent infringement dispute including a proceeding in the International Trade Commission. The agreement ends all outstanding worldwide litigation between these two leading mobile communications companies.

Under the publicly reported terms of the otherwise-confidential settlement, RIM will make an upfront payment and pay ongoing royalties to Motorola. The Ropes & Gray team, which included lawyers from four of the firm's offices, was led by partners Jesse Jenner and Steven Pepe.
