On Nov. 14, Ropes & Gray, along with the National Center for Lesbian Rights (“NCLR”) and several Tennessee firms, filed in the U.S. Supreme Court a petition for a writ of certiorari seeking review of last week’s Sixth Circuit opinion upholding Tennessee’s ban on the recognition of marriages by same-sex couples. After the Sixth Circuit became the first court of appeals to uphold such a ban following the Supreme Court’s decision in United States v. Windsor, the NCLR sought Ropes & Gray’s assistance with taking the case to the Supreme Court. In just one week’s time, attorneys from Ropes & Gray and the NCLR, together with Tennessee counsel, prepared the petition for certiorari, and now await Tennessee’s response. The Ropes & Gray team is being led by appellate and supreme court partner Douglas Hallward-Driemeier.
