A four-attorney pro bono team comprising two current Ropes & Gray attorneys and two former firm associates has been honored with the Father Cuchulain Moriarty Award by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area (Lawyers’ Committee). The award recognizes the pro bono contributions of attorneys assisting the Lawyers’ Committee Asylum Project.

Litigation partner Rocky Tsai (San Francisco), as well as former Ropes & Gray associates Annie Esser and Idin Kashefipour, share the award as members of the LL Family Asylum Team. The team has been recognized for its work on behalf of a mother and son who fled their home country and sought protection  in the United States. In the course of serving this family, the team prepared four applications encompassing multiple areas of immigration law, providing representation that the Lawyers’ Committee characterized as “thoughtful, creative, effective legal work, which included close work with their clients, careful fact-gathering, and a sophisticated legal strategy to show eligibility for protection in a rapidly evolving, challenging area of asylum law.”

In addition to serving as a member of this team, Mr. Tsai recently accepted a membership nomination extended by the Lawyers’ Committee that will enable him to continue to support the organization’s efforts to ensure equal access to justice for all through Oct. 2017.

The LL Family Asylum team will receive its award in San Francisco on Jan. 23 at the Lawyers’ Committee’s 28th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Luncheon.
