Global law firm Ropes & Gray announced today that Christiana M. Lazo has joined its private client group as counsel in the firm’s 350-lawyer New York office.

Clients will benefit from Ms. Lazo’s significant experience in international and domestic tax and estate planning matters. Ms. Lazo routinely counsels global clients on inbound and outbound planning, particularly advising families with members in multiple jurisdictions on wealth transfers, tax-efficient investments, and business ownership structures. In addition, Ms. Lazo’s practice will broaden the private client group’s offerings to clients across many of the firm’s other practice groups who may have international tax concerns.

“Christiana is a talented lawyer whose experience will complement our sophisticated estate planning practice and will significantly enhance our group’s ability to serve clients with cross-border and multinational ties,” said Martin Hall, partner and chair of the private client group. “We are thrilled to have Christiana join us in New York, a hub for international tax and estate planning.”

The private client group at Ropes & Gray provides an integrated, comprehensive approach to estate and tax planning. The group has deep experience in matters relating to the management and transfer of wealth, and regularly advises on issues relating to domestic and international estate and income tax planning. Additionally, its wholly owned subsidiary Ropes Wealth Advisors LLC offers a full range of investment advisory services and financial planning to clients.

Ms. Lazo joins Ropes & Gray from McDermott Will & Emery in New York, where she served as partner in the private client and wealth management group. Ms. Lazo received her LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law, her J.D. from Columbia University School of Law, and her B.A. in English, cum laude, from Columbia College.

“It is exciting to join the accomplished attorneys in the private client group at Ropes & Gray,” said Ms. Lazo. “Given anticipated changes in regulatory structures here in the U.S. and abroad, it is an important time for families and individuals to receive experienced, confident counsel with a global scope, and I look forward to providing that as part of this team.”

With approximately 350 lawyers in New York, Ropes & Gray is one of the 20 largest law firms in the city, where it has expanded its presence significantly over the last two years. In January, tax partner James R. Brown rejoined the firm in New York to focus on advising asset management clients on tax structuring and operational issues. In 2016, six lateral partners joined the firm in New York: tax partner Kristen Chang Winckler, private equity partners David Blittner and Garrett Charon, private investment funds partner Amanda Persaud, business restructuring partner Gregg Galardi, and securities & public companies partner Michael Littenberg.

In 2015, the firm welcomed four lateral partners in New York: mergers & acquisitions partner John Sorkin, finance partner Joanne De Silva, and business & securities litigation partners David Hennes and Gregg Weiner.
