Government Enforcement Partner Authors Times of London Commentary on Lawyers Without Borders Trafficking Protection in Africa

In London’s The Times government enforcement partner Amanda Raad (London) reflects on Ropes & Gray’s partnership with Lawyers Without Borders (LWOB). Ms. Raad traveled with a group of attorneys from Ropes & Gray to East Africa to share legal experience as part of a campaign to curtail human and animal trafficking.

Ms. Raad explains that LWOB believes in “learning by doing,” anchored in a case scenario created by pro bono lawyers. LWOB runs teams of between ten and twenty judges and lawyers in training groups of up to 120 stakeholders, using specially created files that replicate cases in a given country down to minute details.

Ms. Raad led a team of three Ropes & Gray lawyers who joined a faculty of 12 trainers in Kenya, where the team worked with trainees to prosecute what Ms. Raad described as a “horrific elephant poaching scenario.” Recently another Ropes & Gray team joined a trip to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to lay the groundwork for a similar program launched by LWOB to protect against human trafficking.
