Law360 underscored Ropes & Gray’s prominent standing as a leading, global private equity practice, naming the practice one of its 2017 Private Equity Groups of the Year in January. The publication applauded Ropes & Gray’s practice for “showcasing its ability to create an intricate international agreement on an epic scale,” citing the firm’s work advising a Bain Capital-led consortium in its $18 billion deal to acquire Toshiba Corporation’s semiconductor business. A 100+ attorney-strong team advised on the transaction, including on arbitration with Toshiba’s joint venture partner Western Digital. The arbitration, which settled in December 2017, enabled the Bain-led group to move forward with its transaction.

Law360 also praised Ropes & Gray’s private equity practice for its representation of TPG Capital in its $4.2 billion deal with Intel to establish cybersecurity firm McAfee as an independent entity, noting that the transaction “stands out not only for its high value, but also the intensity of its negotiations.” The publication also highlighted the “culmination of years of work” that led to the successful $7.1 billion sale of Lightower Fiber Networks to Crown Castle International Corp. in which Ropes & Gray represented long-time client Berkshire Partners.

David Blittner, private equity practice co-chair emphasized that Ropes & Gray’s attorneys “develop the expertise and groundwork necessary” to complete blockbuster deals. "The sheer volume of work that comes through representing the 200 middle-market firms, that repetition, that ability to see everything that's going on in the market and digest it and understand it is really the bedrock that also allows us to handle the more complicated stuff,” private equity practice co-chair Will Shields told Law360.
