According to three recent reports issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, the National Institutes of Health should tighten its oversight of biomedical research. In a Bloomberg Law article published on Sept. 27, health care and life sciences counsel Valerie Bonham (Washington, D.C.) discussed how the reports show broad interest in possible threats to research activities funded by the government from foreign governments and interests.

The reports come amid increasing concern of undue foreign influence over billions of dollars in research money, as more than 80% of the NIH’s $39 billion budget pays for research grants at universities and other institutions.
