In a Law360 article, litigation & enforcement attorneys examined how ongoing economic sanctions, enforced by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), will continue to be a major area of civil and criminal enforcement focus in the coming years. The authors also noted the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), responsible for administering the Export Administration Regulations, recently made major announcements suggesting that export controls' enforcement may be just as rigorous.
“Collectively, these actions may signal a new era in export enforcement, and regulated parties are on notice to rededicate their compliance efforts.”
The authors further explain that in the current geopolitical and regulatory environment, “it has never been more important for companies, universities, and their advisers to possess a deep understanding of these complex and ever-evolving regulations, as the consequences for violations of U.S. export controls have never been higher.”
The article was authored by litigation & enforcement partners Ama Adams, Brendan Hanifin, and Emerson Siegle, counsel, at Ropes & Gray.
