In June 2013, Intellectual Asset Management Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners (IAM) ranked Ropes & Gray’s Intellectual Property Group among the leading firms in China, Japan and the United States.

Overall, the firm was ranked in eight geographic regions, including new rankings in five areas (China, the United States – Nationwide, California, Washington, D.C., and Illinois) and maintained rankings in Japan, New York and Massachusetts.  The firm was ranked for litigation, licensing and prosecution.

In addition to the firm’s rankings, 21 partners received 25 rankings – including 9 newly ranked partners.

IAM praised the global scope of the IP practice, noting that “Ropes & Gray outreaches many of its competitors on the international stage” and remarked on its strengths across both the litigation and corporate practices: “Ropes & Gray has rapidly carved out a stronghold in litigation and licensing.”

The “thorough, professional and efficient” IP litigation team is also noted as having “more first-chair trial lawyers than a lot of its competitors and is a popular pick for bet-the-company competitor-on- competitor suits.” In summary, IAM highlights the team’s capabilities saying “Ropes & Gray knows what it takes to win at trial and boasts the experience, resources and technical prowess to take on the most complex cases.”

On the corporate side, IAM writes the firm is “incredibly effective on deals” and “houses one of the most sophisticated licensing operations in town.”  The publication also applauded the firm’s “trailblazing patent group,” which “has made its name brokering high-value deals for cutting-edge technology developers.”

Ropes & Gray’s Intellectual Property team is prepared for IP challenges anywhere in the world. The firm’s professionals possess advanced degrees in science and engineering disciplines such as electrical engineering, organic and synthetic chemistry, computer science, pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, neurobiology, immunology, genetics, chemical engineering, biophysics, polymer science, and mechanical and aerospace engineering.

The firm’s IP practice is consistently ranked in Chambers USA, Global and Asia, and in 2010 received the Chambers USA Award for Excellence. The International Who’s Who of Patent Lawyers has named six Ropes & Gray partners to its distinguished list for 2013, and Managing IP’s 2013 “World IP” survey has also recognized Ropes & Gray’s IP practice as a leader in China, Japan and the United States. Ropes & Gray has also had the distinct honor of being ranked in the World Trademark Review’s WTR1000 since its inaugural edition with one attorney named as a leader in the field and was highly ranked in the 2013 edition of the U.S. News & World Report – Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” report in copyright law, information technology law, trademark law, patent law, patent litigation and intellectual property litigation.
