Ropes & Gray received the Pro Bono Institute’s (PBI) 2020 John H. Pickering Award in recognition of the firm's outstanding institutional commitment to pro bono and the inspiring pro bono performance of its attorneys and business support professionals. The award is given in honor of the late John H. Pickering, a distinguished appellate attorney and leader in the legal profession who was equally well known for his extraordinary commitment to pro bono and the public interest. PBI presented the award in conjunction with his law firm, WilmerHale, and the Pickering family.

Ropes & Gray is a founding member of PBI's Law Firm Pro Bono Project®, a global effort to support and enhance the pro bono culture and performance of major law firms in the United States and around the world. The firm is also a signatory to the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge® initiative, an aspirational pro bono standard whereby large law firms commit to providing pro bono services to low-income and disadvantaged individuals and families, as well as to nonprofit groups, and set ambitious pro bono performance goals.

Fighting for justice and equality through pro bono service is a fundamental part of Ropes & Gray’s culture, one of the many ways the firm fulfills its commitment to “practice with purpose.” From reuniting families at the border to fighting for racial justice to protecting the rights of the LGBTQ community, Ropes & Gray strives to provide the highest level of pro bono legal advice and support to those who need it most.

Ropes & Gray demonstrates its ongoing commitment to public service by actively encouraging all of its attorneys to engage in pro bono work. In 2019, Ropes & Gray attorneys, summer associates, retired partners, paralegals and other legal professionals dedicated 172,000 pro bono hours to pressing humanitarian crises and social challenges

PBI will present the 2020 John H. Pickering Award to Ropes & Gray during PBI’s 2020 Fighting for Justice Series Awards Gala on Oct. 1.
