Eli Avila is an associate in Ropes & Gray’s litigation and enforcement practice group. His experience includes appellate and trial-level litigation, government investigations, healthcare regulatory matters, and False Claims Act-related issues. During his first year of law school, Eli co-authored three chapters in the eighth edition of Legal Medicine, the leading treatise in the field. He earned his J.D. from William & Mary Law School.
While in law school, Eli completed a judicial internship with Chief Judge Marla Graff Decker of the Virginia Court of Appeals, where he drafted bench memoranda for civil and criminal matters heard in both panel and en banc proceedings. He served as an appellate law clerk in the Virginia Attorney General’s Office, drafting appellate briefs. He also served as a law clerk in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, preparing pre-trial motions and assisting with trial preparation.
Eli also served as a health law clerk in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, where he investigated healthcare entities and prepared memoranda regarding regulatory and policy matters. As a 1L Summer Associate at Ropes & Gray in Boston, he completed a secondment with a global pharmaceutical company and prepared memoranda related to False Claims Act matters.
Before law school, Eli worked in philanthropic management, partnering with advancement officers at public and private universities to support institutional development initiatives. He also served as an SEO Law Fellow at Ropes & Gray. Eli graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Stony Brook University with a Bachelor of Arts in history.
