Allen S. Cross

Allen is an associate in the intellectual property litigation group focused on patent matters and has represented clients in various technical fields, including mesh networks, semiconductor manufacturing, LEDs, displays, encryption technologies, video encoding/decoding, medical devices, and consumer electronics.

Allen has litigated patent cases in a number of jurisdictions, including federal district courts, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and United States International Trade Commission. Allen is experienced at different stages of patent litigations in district courts and the ITC, including pre-suit investigations, pleadings, motion practice, discovery, claim construction, and expert reports. Allen also has significant experience participating in all phases of post-grant proceedings before the Patent and Trial Appeal Board (PTAB), from filing through final written decision. His experience in bringing inter partes review petitions includes drafting petitions, expert reports, reply briefs, and preparing the taking and defending of expert depositions.

Allen has advised companies on both offensive and defensive IP strategies. He has counseled companies preparing for licensing negotiations, and represented clients in mediation.

Prior to joining Ropes & Gray, Allen worked as a patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). At the USPTO, he examined patents relating to computer architecture.  Allen completed his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Rochester. His graduate studies work focused on optical characterization methods of solid state materials. Allen’s technical expertise spans fields including optics, electro-optic systems, wireless communications and network systems, semiconductor devices and fabrication, computer architecture, and digital signal processing. Allen’s post-graduate research at the University of Virginia involved the design and development of high-powered photo-diodes for the advancement of telecommunications.
