John King is an associate in Ropes & Gray’s litigation and enforcement practice group. He focuses his practice on complex civil litigation, government enforcement actions, and internal investigations. He has worked with a broad array of clients serving diverse industries, including large hospital networks, health care device sellers and manufacturers, multinational banks, universities, and publicly traded companies in the renewable energy, food service, gaming, and retail pharmacy industries.

While at Boston University School of Law, John worked at the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in Justice Scott L. Kafker’s chambers and in Boston University’s Office of the General Counsel. He also served as a managing editor for the Boston University Law Review, where his note, “Microtargeted Political Ads: An Intractable Problem,” was published in April 2022.

  • Representing a publicly traded food service company in a class action lawsuit in federal court, related derivative lawsuits in state and federal courts, and a demand to inspect corporate books and records pursuant to Section 220, each related to allegations of securities fraud.
  • Representing a multinational bank in connection with a state financial regulator’s investigation into its cybersecurity practices.
  • Representing a large hospital network in a False Claims Act lawsuit alleging a fraudulent scheme of billing for services that were allegedly not reasonable and medically necessary.
  • Representing a national retail pharmacy in federal court against over two dozen health plans’ claims that the pharmacy submitted fraudulent prices in millions of payment claims.
  • Represented a global medical device manufacturer in multiple FCA qui tam lawsuits, securing favorable post-motion to dismiss and post-summary judgment settlements.
  • Represented Exactech, Inc., a leading manufacturer and developer of orthopedic implant devices and its affiliated debtors in a successful asset sale through voluntary chapter 11 proceedings, involving the restructuring of more than $350 million of prepetition debt and liabilities, securing approximately $160 million in debtor in possession credit financing, and addressing billions in alleged tort liabilities.
  • Representing a university in numerous tort lawsuits in New York alleging historical misconduct.
  • Represented a publicly traded renewable energy company in a Securities Exchange Commission investigation.
  • Represented the founders and directors of a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) in an action in the Delaware Court of Chancery challenging the SPAC’s business combination with an online sports betting and gambling company.
  • Represented a multinational medical device manufacturer in multiple international internal investigations related to sales of medical devices to private entities and government hospitals.
  • Advised a global private equity advisory firm in connection with due diligence monitoring involving multiple portfolio companies in various jurisdictions internationally.
